French to English translations [PRO]
Social Sciences - Environment & Ecology
French term or phrase: Le Salon de l’Environnement et des Métiers Durables
I would be grateful if you provide some assistance with regards to the above. I am translating a document regarding this organisation. I am unsure as to how to go about it - Do I keep the French and provide a foot note or shoud l attempt to translate, such as Exhibition of the Environment and Sustainable Professions?

The text is describing an exhibition being set up by this organisation.

Do not translate

Explanation:
The usual translations for organisations calling themselves "Salon de ..." is "Fair", "Show", "Exhibition" - did I say "usual"? The organisation has to chose their own translation of their name (if they want one) and as this one is about to launch an English version of their website, no doubt their choice will soon be revealed.

However, in the meantime you have a problem, so just put an explanatory translation of their name in square brackets after the first occurence and refer to them thereafter by their (French) acronym.

Oh dear, it is late: change that "is" to an "are"!

My suggested translation would be "Fair for the Environment and Sustainable Trades/Enterprise/Economic Activities ...". Not "Crafts" as that does not reflect what this particular organisation is concerned with. But it should be made clear that this is not an official title, unless you have it approved by the organisation in question.

agree  Najib Aloui: agree that it should be translated since there is no local singularity either to the fair or the ideas it promotes.

neutral  B D Finch: The organisation seems to be concerned with manufacture and science as well as craftsmanship.
