Could anyone suggest a compact term for the line of codes at the bottom (routing no. + account no. + serial no. + whatever else)? In N. America, it is often called a MICR line, but I need something universal that would describe both American and European checks/cheques...

MICR codeline
Explanation:
This report drawn up by the UK Office of Fair Trading, and examining banking practice in other countries such as NZ and Canada, refers to the "MICR codeline":

Thanks for pointing that out. If MICR is out, then maybe just "codeline" or "code line":

Fair enough. Thanks!
Notes to answerer
Asker: As far as I know, most European countries (including France) use OCR rather than MICR, so MICR is out.
