It is after all a matter of common courtesy to be honest with the people who want to help you for free, if you stand to profit from the outcome; to deliberately NOT declare is tantamount to attempting to deceive, and using any help given, to passing off.
I have to say that I am astonished at the amount of answers received which have been less than generous. All I asked for on a Friday evening was a little bit of help in deciphering whether a cover-girl could be a call girl given that 'pute' was another description. I had absolutely no idea that Kudoz would be a forum to criticise this decision to post my question. I am terribly sorry if I have offended anyone by not saying it was part of a job quote. I haven't read the rules, but frankly, aren't rules MEANT to be bent occasionally?
I now expect an avalanche of outraged comments...
Mod note - I, too, noticed that this was lifted directly from a translation test for a job posted on ProZ.com. I have therefore ticked the box that indicates that this term-help is required to help this asker score a job (or in this case, 2 jobs).
Interesting observation, Tony. Of course, there is no reason why "cover girl" and "pute" need to refer to the same thing. Fact is, a glamorous model and the classier prostitute may be a long way apart socially, but indistinguishable in appearance.
If this is from the same translation test I think it is, it is referring to a woman being challenged by the maître d' in a posh restaurant, who thinks she is the wrong sort of person to be allowed in... THATS's the context
who *call* her by telephone. They tend to be the upper end of the prostitution market; so "call girl" as a translation for "pute" would be wrong.... "Whore" is the closest to "pute" in terms of its connotations.
Just to set the record straight: a cover girl (in either English or French is a girl who appears as a model on the cover of a magazine). "Pute" is a pejorative term for a prostitute, comparable to "whore". A call girl is a prostitute who visits clients...
