French term or phrase: la place dont ils parlent
This comes from a foreward for a report on European enlargement. The author told me that it means "place sociale d'une personne, son ducation, sa personnalit, un tout." Here is the sentence that it is taken from, along with the following sentence.
"Leur apprciation est personnelle, et la place dont ils parlent est clairement identifie. Les nombreuses rfrences fournies permettent chaque lecteur de remonter aux sources, et de complter son information selon ses centres d'intrt ou sa curiosit." Could it be their point of view? That doesn't seem broad enough...

the place they speak of

Explanation:
It's rather difficult to grasp what is meant without the broader context.
Leur appréciation est personnelle = their assessment is personal,
but the word "dont" (=of which) usually refers to something mentioned earlier in the text, as if this "place" is descibed prior to this sentence.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Good luck.

Their perspectives or their frames of reference

Explanation:
The word "attitude" would have been useful here, except that today it has acquired a very different set of meanings.
