French to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - History
French term or phrase:hommes d'ares
Conférence « Les hommes d’ares du Bas-Léon du XIIe au XIVe siècle »
Although part of a tourist leaflet, I've placed this under History in the hope of finding someone who knows what they're talking about. The only definition I have for "are" is a unit of measurement.
Sorry for not getting back sooner, but I've only just had the customer's answer. It was a typo for "armes". So the automatic ProZ choice was right! Thanks to everyone, particularly Fourth who went to so much effort to research this.
The subject of my work is in the region of Brest so this is a possibility, but I'm still going to ask my customer. For the moment, she's on holiday, so I'll have to wait a bit.
Miranda, can you confirm that the subject of your work is situated in the region of Brest, or, generally Finisterre. If so, all connections are in place.

I think I'll have to ask the customer to be sure. I'll keep you posted as soon as possible.
Baie d'ares mentioned by Wm Duckett in his "Dictionnaire..." of 1855, as also montagnes d'ares (now d'Arrée). Can't find the Bay (must be on the Ushant Station) Stuck.
Admiral Villeneuve left for Trafalgar from the Baie d'Ares, near Brest (Bas Léon). There are also "Montaignes" d'Ares nearby. So these men could be from either the Bay or the Mountains.
There is a "troupe ares" in Finisterre (Bas Léon) which does spectacles, reenacting on horseback "historic" events Google Finisterre Ares. All very sad. "Ermold le noir" (circa 790) is actually Greg, dressed up.
fourth's comment taken, yes this (pseudo) revelation was 1974. http://www.final-age.net/L-evangile-d-Ares.html. Also, as it refers to a place, Arès would have a capital letter. Sorry, this was a red herring.
I saw the reference to Ares too, but with a title like that your common or garden tourist wouldn't know what it is, so I'm not sure they'd put it in a tourist leaflet. I'm tempted to go for Michael's answer - could always be a possibility. There is no further context, since it's just an event among many others ranging from walks to festivals.
