If you rent a property, then insurance is a statutory requirement for your main residence. Any holiday rental through legal channels will require liability insurance and you won't get the key to the property unless and until proof has been provided! As Tony says, and as your text indicates, that is generally part and parcel of standard house insurance in a "clause villégiature" for example. Insurance companies provide an "attestation d'assurance villégiature" which generally satisfies those who are renting out the property.

Over here, most people who have their own house insurance for their main home ('habitation principale') have included within it (as your text says) cover for a rented holiday home. So the landlord will have an overall buildings policy, for example, and expects tha tenants to have their own cover already, for tenant's liability — or to take it out specially, of course, if they haven't.
