Is this simply "control proof reading" but seems a bit strange in the context.

Explanation:
or to make it more explicit for non-specialists:

with a verification reread of the backed-up data [by its services]

the "verification" of written data is a pretty old concept - there is an option in DOS called "verify" or "verification" where after each "write" the written data is read and compared with the original data [= relecture de contrôle]

".....
The XCOPY command got the /V option from the COPY command. You can even find remnants of that command today:

C:\> VERIFY /?
Tells cmd.exe whether to verify that your files are written correctly to a
disk.

VERIFY [ON | OFF]

Type VERIFY without a parameter to display the current VERIFY setting.
C:\> VERIFY
VERIFY is off.

What does it mean to "verify that your files are written correctly to a disk"?

What it means to CMD.EXE is that after copying each file, it goes back and rereads both the source and destination and performs a byte-for-byte comparison of the files. If any bytes differ, it reports an error. ..."

much slower that the usual "write" (and usually NOT done) but guaranted to spot the one in zillion hardware error in writing data.

neutral  writeaway: is this for specialists?

-> well, the service provider is supposed to know a thing or two about backups - at least one would hope so ... as for those commissioning the services, they've done their homework well enough to know to ask for "verification rereads"!

agree  Tony M: With some reservations as to the precise wording; and yes, clearly this IS for specialists, this is a very important technical point in a legal document, no mistakes tolerated here!
