Common law wife? Explanation: I wonder if it refers to the fact that they were husband and wife under local rules and customs, but had not gone through the civil marriage. Perhaps they were married in a church but had not celebrated the official civil marriage. |

no marriage (or pre-nuptial) agreement was made Explanation: You're not going mad. The parents were married, since there is talk of an épouse. But public records list the name of the husband and the maiden name of the mother (hence miss). Contrat de mariage is a marriage agreement, or pre-nuptial agreement. The marriage agreement is separate from the marriage itself: it only sets out certain rules as to the rights to both spouses properties in case things go wrong. You can be married without making such an agreement. |
