French to English translations [PRO] Law/Patents - Law (general) / Courts ( Switzerland)
French term or phrase:Chambre patrimoniale cantonale
I have not been able to find a satisfactory translation for the name of this Swiss cantonal Court. Please don't tell me not to translate it - I intend to retain the French name but I want an explanatory translation to put in brackets.
I know that LOJV = Law on the Organisation of the Courts and Tribunals
Selon l'article 96g LOJV la Chambre patrimoniale cantonale connaît, pour l'ensemble du canton, de toutes les causes patrimoniales dont la valeur litigieuse est supérieure à CHF 100,000.--, ainsi que toutes les causes qui lui sont attribuées par la loi.
Have just researched a bit more and I agree there is no real translation for "patrimonial" (it's more than simply "property law") in this context and will therefore use "Cantonal Patrimonial Court". Please post this as your suggestion so that I can award you 4 points and close!
I always prefer to give an "explanatory" translation and even more so here, as a "patrimonial court" makes no sense to me and wouldn't to any EN-speaker asfaik.
Could "causes patrimoniales" be monetary disputes? The subject matter of my document concerns the release of money held by a bank.
I know you say you want to translate it, but do you need to?
If the French sentence you've given is what you're translating, the term is already followed by an explanation.
The names of courts are not normally translated in law reports and other legal documents because they have no exact equivalent in other countries.
If you really insist on translating it, I guess it has to be "cantonal patrimonial chamber", which is not very helpful. And most people, even those who spoke no French, would be able to work out what "chambre" and "cantonale" mean.
Sometimes you can explain too much and insult people's intelligence.

cantonal patrimonial court/chamber
Explanation: See the discussion entries. Personally I wouldn't translate it, but I appreciate that's a matter of opinion.
