  -> Yes but I don't like to take liberties with a statute (Civil Code Art 371-1). Otherwise, would at least have rephrased it "until reaching the age of majority or until emancipation."
agree  philgoddard: My previous disagree was based on a misreading of the French - sorry! It says "elle appartient", not "il". How about "it lies with the parents until the child achieves legal majority or emancipation"?

In a different context I might combine "majorité" and "émancipation" and say "achieves legal independence", but I agree with mrrrafe: since this is a statute, I'd stick quite close to the French.

agree  mrrafe: Yes. I thought I responded but don't see it. The point was that, statutory language or not, majority and emancipation could occur at two different times, while "independence" could be a 3rd separate event as it has no settled legal meaning.
