Elle est composée des substantifs latins affectio (adfectio) = affection, la manière d'être et societas = association, communauté, société (societatis au génitif). Elle signifie en droit l'intention des asssociés de poursuivre une oeuvre commune, sur un pied d'égalité (c'est-à-dire la volonté de travailler ensemble, de partager les bénéfices et les pertes).
