French term or phrase: le retour des produits ne peut donner lieu au versement d'indemnités.
Help! Stuck with this bit! It's regarding general terms of sale, "returning does not mean that compensation will necessarily occur". The next sentence is equally as baffling. A défaut, le retour sera sans effet". Need help on that, as well. Any help would be much appreciated

Another suggestion would be:
The return policy will not allow any compensation
As for the other sentence:
Therefore, the return will have no outcome.

Many thanks Denali for your answer.Out of all these submitted suggestions, yours followed most closely the flow of the rest of the text. It needed "refund" - in fact I translated the sentence as "Returned goods may not be refundable". Thanks for getting me on the track! Good luck - Mynnaf!

"The returning of products (merchandise) may not give rise

Explanation:
to the payment of compensation; by default the return will have no effect." This leads us to suppose the use of credit notes, in which the money is not refunded but instead is used in the purchase of other items. This is normal in distribution contracts presupposing a long-term, multiple-order relationship.

Returned goods may not by reimbursed.

Explanation:
Compensation in English legalese suggests more than reimbursement. It means monetary payment for loss and/or damage and may exceed the value of the goods. Compensation is a matter for the courts, generally and I would suggest avoid using this term here. (It is closer to "dommages & intérêts", and this is clearly not what is being meant here). For this reason alone, I would opt for "reimbursement".

What is also strange is the use of "pouvoir". (No, not the use of "ne" alone - no problem there, of course - but that somehow the meaning here appears closer to "shall" (cannot) than "may"). I'm going to stick my neck out on this one and say it is perhaps best rendered by "shall not".

As to the second sentence : "à défaut, le retour sera sans effet".

"Failing which (the reimbursement), the return shall be void".

"Notwithstanding (the return), the return shall be void".

On second thoughts, perhaps I am wrong in thinking that "pouvoir" could be read in any other way than "may". "May" suggests than it may or may not, and when read with the second sentence could mean that if the (seller?) decides not to reimburse the value of the goods, then they shall not be considered as having been returned. Tough on the client, but then we don't have the full story!

"Returned goods may not by reimbursed. If the goods are not reimbursed, then the return shall be considered void".

... if not, the return shall be considered void".
