French term or phrase: la route capitale
From an upscale caterer's marketing materials:
"Frequentee par les authentiques connaisseurs, la route capitale relie le Paris des affaires au Paris culturel, institutionnel et mediatique, tout en passant par l'international." This is the heading for a section that describes various elegant places where catered events are held. I'm not sure if this is an actual or made-up term. Thanks, Karen

the capital road
Explanation:
you can also try capital, cardinal road
i live in paris but i fail to see if it describes an actual road
i would suggest to keep capital since paris is our capital!
i wouldn't advise "main"

Thanks again for the prompt answer. I thought this might be an historical concept, but I'll just go with the literal translation as you suggested. Thanks also for confirming that it's not the name of an actual road. Karen
