Sorry to add this note so late after my initial posting. I have a problem with my right hand, which makes typing difficult.
Numerous google hits for \"faire compétition\" show that, in a marketing context (between companies), the phrase means \" compete with\".
In a context involving sport, we would be talking about \" taking part in\", or \" competing in\".
Thanks to all of you who posted notes of agreement before I posted this note.
