French to English translations [PRO] Marketing / Petroleum industry R & D
French term or phrase:Procédé/Produit de rupture
The context is the petrochemical industry, Refining/Marketing, Research and Development. Two examples (sadly, both from PPT docs, so not much context, I'm afraid).
Could it be breakaway or breakthrough?
4. Spécialités et Produits , Procédés de ruptures:
Applications nouvelles, nouveaux produits, GTL, BTL
Is "rupture" a technical term or a marketing term (related to the end of product life cycles or, conversely, innovation leading to new products). Unfortunately, there isn't enough context in the document for me to tell for sure.
Yes, this is true. In fact, in the same series of documents, "craquage" and "hydrocraquage" are used. So, do you think that "rupture" refers to the same process? And does it fit in logically with GTL/BTL products? Thanks for any more info you can provide.

Procédé/Produit de rupture
Explanation: rupture of a chemical bond
an exothermal oxidation reaction in which the heat evolved results from the rupture of chemical bonds.

The force required to rupture the streptavidin-biotin complex was calculated here by computer simulations. The computed force agrees well with that obtained by recent single molecule atomic force microscope experiments. These simulations suggest a detailed multiple-pathway rupture mechanism involving five major unbinding steps. Binding forces and specificity are attributed to a hydrogen bond network between the biotin ligand and residues within the binding pocket of streptavidin. During rupture, additional water bridges substantially enhance the stability of the complex and even dominate the binding interactions. In contrast, steric restraints do not appear to contribute to the binding forces, although conformational motions were observed.
