French term or phrase: Il est dommage que vos 2
Il est dommage que vos 2 derniers messages soient moins sympathiques
rebecca York
English translation:It's a pity your last two messages have been less friendly... [than your earlier ones]
Explanation:
After wresting with all the possible tenses and tones, I finally settled on the phrase above as the closest colloquial English rendering and the most accurate reflection of the flavor of the French.

At a guess, the rest of the sentence in French goes on to explain specifically WHY the relative unfriendliness of the two latest messages is a pity (or a shame). Perhaps the writer had something to offer his/her correspondent, or was about to suggest something that would have been pleasant and/or beneficial for both of them. In your French text, does the next phrase include the words "parce que..." or "car..."?

I do hope this helps!

Thank you so very much for your assistance. The writer does not speak English and clearly misunderstood my messages. With your help, I found a translator on line and sent a follow-up in "French"! It worked! Again, thank you!

Explanation:
" It is really sad to see that your last two messages were so unfriendly"

The emphasis should be put on the verb to be ("is"), pour donner appui au mot 'sad'. Question de sentiment, quoi!

J'espere que ça aide.

It's a pity that your last 2 messages are not so friendly

Explanation:
I have struggled for years with the word "sympathique". Somehow, no word in English seems to render the exact same meaning as in French. "Sympathique" has an array of different feelings to it, as if you put together all the meanings of the words "friendly", "congenial", "most likable", "sympathetic", "giving rise to warm feelings". To this day, I find it very difficult to translate.

But in the case above, and since it is used in a negative form (moins sympathiques) it can probably be translated as "not so friendly", or even "not so nice", but I find the word "nice" insipid, so I use it as little as I can. "Unfriendly" would be too strong.

It's a pity that your last 2 messages should not be as friendly

Explanation:
I somehow didn't feel quite satisfied with my last suggestion. After thinking it over, I realise that it is the form of the verb in English (as well as in French, by the way) that left me unhappy. I would prefer the above translation to the one I wrote previously.

I also feel that the French sentence, to be proper French, should have read "Il est dommage que vos 2 derniers messages aient été moins sympathiques". However, the author chose to use the present tense, so you might like to translate it as such in English. Otherwise, you may prefer the translation to be: "It's a pity that your last 2 messages were not as friendly". or "It's a pity that your last 2 messages should not have been as friendly".

Explanation:
It's a pity that/a shame that ...

...your last two messages were...

...not so nice / not so friendly [that previous ones]

I am British born and bred. Whilst it is no doubt American to say "it's too bad...", I think an English reflex would be to say one of the above. Up to you to decide which is the most appropriate in your context.

Have fun deciding!
