I would translate it by 'shaft' here;
'Tige' can designate a lot of things, a shaft, rod, butt ...

In medecin, however, the word 'shaft' (exploratory excision shaft, examination shaft) is most commonly used, even though -in this context- it could also be a (long knitting-) needle, etc. The object used is not being described.
