the value of the mains resistance
Explanation:
Some instruments may require a kind of protective resistor placed in serie with the mains supply, in order do minimize the mains voltage variation effects and therefore for small power needs protect the instrument or make it able to operate on a large voltage range. The higher the resistor value, the closer to a current source behaves the supply.
However if the resistance value is to high, the current drawn will not be sufficient for the instrument to operate.
