French term or phrase: racine secondaire

Still a couple of things puzzling me in this report on a patient undergoing anterior resection of the rectum. The report refers to "Ouverture de la racine primaire puis secondaire du méso sigmoide". But everything I've looked at only refers to the root of the sigmoid mesentery; not to more than one root. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Guidance gratefully received.
