En fonction de la hauteur de l'épithélium concerné par les anomalies cellulaires, on parlera de CIN1 (Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia), de CIN2, de CIN3 ou de CIS (Carcinome In Situ). L'une des limites de la biopsie est cependant qu'elle peut ne pas avoir portée sur la zone la plus anormale, et donc sous-estimer le stade de la lésion.
