French term or phrase: donne à voir
The article is talking about a multimedia exhibition, it says that the exhibition

'donne à voir les héritiers des artistes de Haigh-Ashbury, Telegraph Avenue et Greenwich Village qui avaient entrouvert les portes de la perception, closes par le bain de sang du Vietnam et les meurtres commandités par Charles Manson'

does it mean in this case 'features' or 'exhibits' or have I completely misunderstood!

Explanation:
This usage is quite common. It is poetic, but the meaning is straightforward without hidden facets.

And yes, "exhibits" also works. "Features" is a bit ambiguous, I'd avoid it here.

And a more poetic turn of the phrase would probably be better than a simple one, to capture the flavor.

-> Could be, have to see the context. It may be stronger than the author's intention. I read this as referring to flower-power or psychedelic art that more went out of style than it was suppressed.
