French term or phrase: taux de couverture/visiteurs uniques
This is part of a description of a internet search engine. It has x% taux de couverture and x visiteurs uniques.
jp
English translation:unique visitors
Explanation:
I recently had to translate the same terms, and found "unique visitors" used in several English-language Web sites. I found one Web site that gives a definition for "unique visitor," but unfortunately didn't write down the URL. I do remember, however, that it refers to "unduplicated" visitors, i.e. each individual who visits the site is counted once, no matter how many times that person visits. Please see below for 2 Web sites that use the term "unique visitors." I ended up using that term since it did seem to be a term used by marketing professionals.

Karen

Explanation:
Another way to translate "taux de couverture" would be to use "market share" or "penetration".

Since the internet is accessible theoretically from anywhere (once you're connected), "couverture" meaning purely coverage would be 100%. (Consider cellular phone coverage: not all providers cover 100% of the market). So in this case it has to refer to how much market share this search engine is pulling either from total connected people or for a specific demographic slice of the market (25-54 single males, for example).

One-time visitors is ok, so long as the idea conveyed is total number of different individuals coming to the site for the given time period.

Deb

re: taux de couverture

Explanation:
Thanks for the Kudo points, but I didn't get a chance to respond to your second term, taux de couverture, because my electricity was about to be turned off. I used "coverage rate" because the definition of the term "coverage" in the online media glossary I found seemed to fit the term as it was used in my document. (Coverage: The number of or percentage of individuals, households, etc., potentially exposed to a medium or a schedule at least once. Also known as "Reach".) But I think the person who suggested "market share or penetration" has a good point, especially as it pertains to the Internet. The media glossary Web site is below.
