housing-development sites Explanation: is the general meaning of "lotissements" (literally, building plots or sites for housing developments). The specific meaning of "communaux" will depend on the rest of your document. For instance, does the housing in question consist of so-called "subsidized housing" (also known as "public housing" or, informally, "the Projects") for poorer people? If so, then "public housing-development sites" might be a good choice. On the other hand, if the plots of land are to be developed commercially for sale to individuals, you could probably simply say "commercial housing-development sites." One thing they probably won't be is "communal," which in French would be "communautaires" rather than "communaux." |

municipally-funded/municipally-sponsored housing developments Explanation: It would seem that this has to do with urban planning land preservation measures. I'd almost be inclined to say: municipally controlled land use allotment. Termium has this to say about *lotissements communaux* (but no translation--sorry): French:Urban Studies lotissement communal s OBS - [grâce au réveil des municipalités n'hésitant pas à entreprendre des --s que peut seule être sauvée la structure rurale.] s Here's an article about a mayor in the north of France who's pushing this kind of housing development TErmium; Le grand dictionnaire terminologique Reference: http://www.bretagne-online.com/telegram/htdocs/archive/2000/... |

local housing developments, housing estates Explanation: Confirmation of what Yolanda came up with. Lotissement = housing develoment made up of plots of which in turn are made up of parcels of land. Each parcel is identified on the Land Registry (GB) or the "cadastre" in French. Each plot will be the subject of a particular deed of sale. There are disputes as "notaires" get it wrong and there are errors on the "cadastre" too! Communaux = "borough" in GB English, district. France is divided into regions, regions into departments, the departments into communes. I own a house on a plot of land which is in the commune of Crac'h in the Department of Le Morbihan which is one of the 4 departments making up the region of Brittany. LOTISSEMENTS COMMUNAUX are thus housing developments (housing estates also - GB)made up of plots of land owned by the local council/borough council/district council depending on your audience. The land is owned by the council but we don't know whether the property (houses) on it are or not. More info needed. |
