French term or phrase: l'en-cours financier
This is an auto leasing contract. If the Lessee returns the car before the end of the contract, he/she has to pay the car firm an amount "égale à la différence entre l'en-cours financier à la date de restitution et la valeur de revente du véhicle".
Help please!

English translation:outstanding financial balance
Explanation:
The amount to be paid (i.e., the penalty for early termination of the lease contract) is "equal to the difference between the outstanding financial balance on the date on which the vehicle is returned, and the resale value of the vehicle."

In this context, the "outstanding financial balance" refers to the total lease amount owed at the time by the lessee, rather than to any outstanding finance charges (i.e., interest fees). It's a big difference (and so, potentially, is the penalty)!

current amount owing / balance outstanding

Explanation:
en-cours = current amount ; current quantity

The difference between the balance outstanding and the market value upon the return of the vehicle.

"Un an après sa création, ce nouveau marché représente déjà un encours (montnant de titres en circulation) de plus de XXX milliards de francs (LE MONDE)"

It can also be used to mean work-in-progress.
