French to English translations [Non-PRO]
French term or phrase: I'm wondering if someone could propose an answer to each of the following
questions.

1)How to you say in French "to rewind" (not "rembobiner" which means rewinding to the beginning) and "to fast-forward?"

2)How do you say in French "to click off" as in "I clicked off that website" or... 'the person I was talking to in the chat room'"?

3) difference between "ce dont" and "de quoi"? Example: "J'ai ce dont tu as besoin" and "J'ai de quoi tu as besoin." Thank you for your help.
Matt

3. de quoi is an interrogative form, and does not fit the syntax you give. *Ce dont* is a relative pronoun with no antecedent (that is, *ce* takes the grammatical place of the absent antecedent, for grammatical purposes). Thus:

Question: De quoi a-t-il besoin?

Answer: J'ai ce dont il a besoin (mais je ne vais pas te dire ce que c'est; mais je de vais pas te dire de quoi il s'agit). Note that I just used your *de quoi* in what appears not to be a question... but it is! This is simply phrasing a presumed question (the next question the other person might ask...) in indirect form.

How are you and Stéphanie getting along?

The last part of your explanation I did not follow. "je ne vais pas te dire de quoi il s'agit" (and not "ce dont il s'agit". According to you, this is a "presumed question." In French, one says, "Je sais de quoi je parle" (not "ce dont je parle) in conversational French. I always here this;maybe this is not correct. This is not **interrogative** because I'm not asking a question. What constitutes an indirect question?

Have you received my last 3 e-mail messages? I sent you one on the 14, 21 and 25 of September.

Sincerely,

retour rapide / rembobiner

Explanation:
Hello Matt, back again?

I concur with Yolanda for all three, with perhaps the further possibility of "retour rapide" (fast rewind). Never the less, I can assure you that "rembobiner" is used whether or not it is right back to the beginning. If you want s/o to stop before rewinding right back to the start then you say it, eg : "rembobine jusqu'à là où il tombe de son vélo". (Wind it back to the bit where he falls of his bike), said as the first thing which has come into my head. You could also say "Fais retour rapide jusqu'à..." but no-one says that as naturally as "rembobiner", believe you me! "Retour rapide" is also the labelling you would expect on the rewind button, if the manufacturer has taken the time & gone to the expense of labelling the buttons in French.
