French term or phrase: dans le cadre de la Presidence francaise
Does anyone know if there is a standard translation for this phrase? The sentence is as follows: "Dans le cadre de la Presidence francaise, j'ai souhaite que soit organisee une conference europeene intitulee ..." This comes from the Ministre de l'Economie, des finances et de l'Industrie." Thanks! Karen

English translation:within the context...
Explanation:
...is probably better, in terms of the presidency of the nation, than the other two standard renderings of the phrase ("within the scope of..." and "in the framework of...").

You could also take the less literal road, with "In terms of the French presidency..." or "As far as the French presidency is concerned....," as suits your taste.

Cheers, HC

In cooperation?

Explanation:
Thanks for your suggestions, HC. I thought of these, too, but felt the meaning wasn't clear. I'm not sure what "in the context of the French Presidency" means. Does that mean "in cooperation with..." or "by order of ..."? Any thoughts would be much appreciated! karen

Within the context of the French presidency,...

Explanation:
I would agree with Heather as to the choice between the "classic" ways of translating "Dans le cadre de...". I prefer this one too in your context.

Against the backdrop of the French Presidency

Explanation:
I would think that this conference is not taking place "within" the French Presidency, but that the French Presidency provides it with some "frame" or in English, better say "backdrop". Just a suggestion...
