French to English translations [Non-PRO]
French term or phrase: TAXE PAYÉE SUR ÉTAT, AL, [illegible]
This is a French driver's license. In a box on the outside cover it says, "+ AL sans exceder 80 cm3 embrayage et changement de vitesses automatique." What does AL mean? At the bottom of that same panel it says, "TAXE PAYÉE SUR ÉTAT." What does "SUR ÉTAT" mean in this case? On the inside there is a listing of "CATÉGORIES DE VÉHICULES POUR LESQUELS LE PERMIS EST VALABLE."
In the box for category B it says,"Véhicules [two or three words are obliterated by overtyping and a bad copy] d'un P.T.A.C. > 3 [3.5 t ?]." Does anyone out there have a French driver's license so you can tell me what is really written in this box? Thanks; your help is very much appreciated.

Explanation:
TAXE PAYE SUR ETAT = "Roadworthiness fee paid." (In other words, France is trying to get the lemons off the highways...)

CLASSES OF VEHICLES FOR WHICH THE LICENSE IS VALID:
A1: Vehicles [with engine displacement] of more than 50 cubic centimeters (cc) but not exceeding 125 cc. ---
A: Motorcycles, with or without a sidecar. ---
B: Vehicles that have fewer than 10 seats, and whose PTAC* is not greater than 3,500 kilograms (kg). ---
C: Heavy vehicles: Single vehicles whose PTAC is greater than 3,500 kg but not greater than 19,000 kg, and combinations of vehicles or articulated vehicles whose PTRA* is greater than 3,500 kg but not greater than 12,500 kg. ---
C1: Super-heavy vehicles: Single vehicles whose PTAC is greater than 19,000 kg, and combinations of vehicles or articulated vehicles whose PTRA is greater than 12,500 kg. ---
D: Passenger transport vehicles that have more than 9 seats or that carry more than 9 passengers. ---
E: Vehicles in any one of classes B, F, (B), or D, towing a trailer whose PTAC is more than 750 kg. ---
F: Specially equipped vehicles in Class A1, Class A, or Class B. ---
*PTAC (Poids total autorisé en charge): Total authorized laden weight;
*PTRA (Poids total roulant autorisé): Total authorized rolling weight. --- My guess (and this is a guess) about "AL" would be "Classe A ( léger)" (i.e., mopeds or small motorcycles), which fits the indicated engine displacement (80 cc). -- Collegially, yours, HC
