I know that "traiteur" can be translated as "caterer", "takeaway" depending on context but this is referring to a "traiteur" who supplies prepacked pre-cooked (or part-cooked) foods to supermarket chains. The foods are not sold in the frozen food department, but are stored/displayed in the refrigerated foods section and include, pizzas, meat dishes, exotic and delicatessen type foods. Any ideas about a one or two worder for this one?
I was a bit torn between the ready-made/prepared/ready-to-serve idea. I have seen prepared quite a bit in UK Contexts but ready-made has a certain ring to it. But the closest bland and nearest translation is indeed as you already guessed " Caterer"
In french coutries and ex-colonies all over i.e. in Africa, the South Pacific,S.E. Asia a "Traiteur" will do a number of pre-cooked dishes.
Sometimes for workers that collect it in the morning in their "Gamelle" a number of pan dishes ingeneously packed on top of one another and secured by a two legged system of retaining handles.
The traiteur will also "cater" to a hostess that wants to hold a dinner party.
In France "Traiteur" will even cater and prepare foods of the highest quality.
I think the famous " Maxime Restaurant" is also providing its recipe on the basis of "Traiteur Preparation"
So you have to use discretion.
I would suggest that if it is everyday and quite ordinary food: use the term caterer.
If its the high quality food spectrum that you are talking about, use the French term unalduratated...i.e. Traiteurs
