French term or phrase: traiteur
I know that "traiteur" can be translated as "caterer", "takeaway" depending on context but this is referring to a "traiteur" who supplies prepacked pre-cooked (or part-cooked) foods to supermarket chains. The foods are not sold in the frozen food department, but are stored/displayed in the refrigerated foods section and include, pizzas, meat dishes, exotic and delicatessen type foods. Any ideas about a one or two worder for this one?

I was a bit torn between the ready-made/prepared/ready-to-serve idea. I have seen prepared quite a bit in UK Contexts but ready-made has a certain ring to it. It's not easy in fact as deli comes close too but is not quite what I was looking for. Thanks for your input all of you.

I would say you mean a delicatessen counter. That's what they call it in the U.S., if I am not mistaken.

fournisseur

Explanation:
In this sense, I think we are talking about a provider. In the food industry, as well as in any industry, those who provide goods are known, in French, as "fournisseur".

Caterers/Traiteurs

Explanation:
Traiteurs in French countries are not quite your everyday caterer, delicatessen and or food technologist ...yuk! that you might encounter in "Anglo-saxon" styles caterers.'
But the closest bland and nearest translation is indeed as you already guessed " Caterer"

In french coutries and ex-colonies all over i.e. in Africa, the South Pacific,S.E. Asia a "Traiteur" will do a number of pre-cooked dishes.

Sometimes for workers that collect it in the morning in their "Gamelle" a number of pan dishes ingeneously packed on top of one another and secured by a two legged system of retaining handles.

The traiteur will also "cater" to a hostess that wants to hold a dinner party.

In France "Traiteur" will even cater and prepare foods of the highest quality.

I think the famous " Maxime Restaurant" is also providing its recipe on the basis of "Traiteur Preparation"

So you have to use discretion.

I would suggest that if it is everyday and quite ordinary food: use the term caterer.

If its the high quality food spectrum that you are talking about, use the French term unalduratated...i.e. Traiteurs
