French to English translations [Non-PRO]
French term or phrase: forces vives
Les forces vives du pays se sont mobilisées pour protester contre la construction d'un hôtel sur l'Ile aux Deux Cocos
Jane-Mary RIVIERE
Local time: 17:52
English translation:organised forces, protagonists
Explanation:
The "forces vives" are the main social and economical players in the country.

See : www.epures.com/Pages/page15.html, where "forces vives" are referred to in an article as the "acteurs économiques & socio-culturels". The article is about how ordinary people are becoming increasingly interested in their socio-economic and cultural environment : "la société civile s'investit de plus en plus et de mieux en mieux".

If the rest of your text is couched in strong terms, then you could probably use "organised forces" or "protagonists".

Bonne journée.

Nikki

Community leaders, the community

Explanation:
Community leaders joined forces to protest against the construction of a hotel on the Deux Cocos island. You could also say "The community joined forces ...".

Active forces or "Forces vives"

Explanation:
I agree with this definition already given by another translator. But some leave it as it is in French. Here is what I found:

"Other violence
between Federalists and pro-Zafy militants (Active Forces or
Forces Vives) in Diego Suarez Province in March and April also
left a small number dead. " (http://www.cpsr.org/cpsr/privacy/privacy_international/count...

"36. Since the Active Forces ("Forces Vives") of the Nation Conference in 1990, Benin's public finances have continued to improve, confirming the success of current reforms." (http://www.hri.ca/fortherecord1999/documentation/coredocs/hr...

"These
inter-Congolese political negotiations involving ‘les forces vives’ shall lead to a new political dispensation and
national reconciliation in the DRC. " (http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:system04.rug.ac.be/intp...

"the MLC has decided to cooperate with the non-armed opposition, the Forces Vives and all the actors who have decided to take part in the rectification of Congo." (http://www.managingbusiness.com/mlc/19a.htm)

"Objectives: to respond to the request by the 'forces vives' of the locality that the image of the Caro Calyptus community be uplifted." and "The other speakers were the Village Councillor, the President of the forces vives and the President of the Women’s Association of St-Hilaire" ( http://women.intnet.mu/ongoing_activities.htm")

Use the English expression or leave it in French. The choice is yours.

Explanation:
Controversy over tourism development on the island of Mauritius (Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar; member of the British Commonwealth) has apparently been going on for a while:

1) "The inhabitants of Blue Bay, who have mobilised against the forthcoming construction of a hotel on Ile aux Deux Cocos, insist that a hotel and a marine park are wholly incompatible. [According to] the Movement for rhe Defense of the Blue Bay Marine Park, 'After the construction of a hotel there will not be any marine park left to manage'…" (_Le Mauricien_, January 24, 1999)

and: "Friends of the Environment and the Mauritius Marine Conservation Society (MMCS) appeal to the Government to stop the farce: either MANAGE the Blue Bay Marine Park or DE-PROCLAIM the park. When the two Marine Parks at Balaclava and Blue Bay, were proclaimed on October 7, 1997, the MMCS hoped that at long last a new era of lagoon and reef management was at hand. What a deception! …. How can the MMCS agree to another major development project on the Ile aux Deux Cocos in the Marine Park in the absence of an objective evaluation of the environmental impact?" (_Le Week End_, 7th of February 7, 1999)

In light of these reports (and absent any mention of armed insurrection in the Congo!), a phrase like "demonstrators, local activists, and concerned citizens" might do the trick.
