DEF – The technique of drilling at an angle from the vertical by deflecting the drill bit.
Directional wells are drilled for a number of reasons: to develop an offshore lease from one drilling platform; to reach a pay zone
beneath land where drilling cannot be
done; (e.g.) beneath a railroad, cemetery, a lake; and to reach the production zone of a burning well to flood the formation.
CONT – Directional Drilling. Drilling
techniques have been perfected for
deflecting the drill from the vertical in a gradual curve as the hole goes deeper.
Such directional drilling can tap reserves that are inaccessible by vertical drilling.
Directional drilling is used both for onshore and offshore operations.
CONT – Although wellbores are normally
planned to be drilled vertically, many
occasions arise when it is necessary or
advantageous to drill at an angle from the vertical. Controlled directional drilling makes it possible to reach subsurface points laterally remote from the point where the bit enters the earth. Directional drilling involves the use of turbodrills, Dyna-Drills,
whipstocks, or other deflecting tools to deviate the hole in the desired direction.
DEF – Forage d'un puits destiné à
atteindre un objectif situé dans un
emplacement directement inaccessible, ou à multiplier les puits à partir d'un forage initial.
