I must admit, I was surprised although I'd hear the term 'literary romance'. Literary novel' sounds rather odd to me too-see Richard Benham's comment above
I've dealt with literature all my life, but I've never heard of "literary novel" or "roman littéraire", with the exception of the title of a book by C.-M. Chenu: "Jacqqueline Emerveillé-le roman llittéraire". Can you give the name of the author?
