Internet access provider / Internet service provider Explanation: I happen to be working on a document that makes a distinction between these, although they're often interchangeable in English. In my document, the company first called itself an IAP because all it did was provide access to the Internet, but then it started creating content and offering a variety of services, so it now calls itself an Internet service provider. The more common term in English is Internet service provider, usually just called an ISP, and I believe that can refer to a company that provides everything from access only to a full-range of services. In any case, I see ISP far more often than IAP. I'm working on a rush job, so I don't have time to provide references. Karen |

FSI: fournisseur de services Internet This one offers more services, such as e-mail or web browsers, not just a phone number that you can call and connect to the internet. Here is the explanation given in the Grand Dictionnaire terminologique: En anglais, les termes « Internet service provider » (« ISP ») et « Internet access provider » (« IAP ») sont souvent consideres comme des synonymes et utilises indifferemment, meme si le premier terme (plus repandu) designe une notion plus generale. En effet, un fournisseur d'acces ne donne que la connexion a Internet alors que le fournisseur de services offre a ses clients plusieurs services supplementaires, dont l'hebergement de pages personnelles. En francais, c'est le terme « fournisseur d'acces a Internet », plus specifique, qui est le plus utilise. En contexte, la forme abregee « fournisseur d'acces » est courante. Ce dernier terme a ete adopte par la Commission generale de terminologie et de neologie de France et a paru au « Journal officiel de la Republique francaise » dans un avis date du 16 mars 1999.
