"Ambiant" means a lot more than "room temperature"! Ambiant means basically the surrounding medium. You may be talking about "température ambiante" but also about "air ambiant", "atmosphère ambiante", "humitité ambiante", "pression ambiante", "éclairage ambiant", etc., etc., etc.

I think that in the present case, "en ambiant" is a shortcut for "en milieu ambiant" (ambiant is treated here as a noun, when it really is an adjective)

It seems that maybe they are talking about a smoke detector, which uses either optical or ionization methods of detection.

I think that the whole sentense might read: "The technical area should be equiped (or fitted) with optical and ionic detection (or detectors) operable under local surrounding conditions, ..."

I just reread what I wrote and I would like to amend it: you can drop the word "local", which is redundant, to make it "operable under surrounding conditions" which sound a lot better.

"ambiant" could have an "e" missing and be "ambiante" which is another way of writing what is more commonly seen as "amiante". Looks to me as though this is quite simply a device for detecting the presence of that fairly unpleasant substance, asbestos.

The workshop (?) should be fitted with an optical and ionic asbestos detection device in the false floor and ceiling. (or maybe even 'and a' false floor and ceiling).

This is usually where asbestos was used in the past in lots of buildings.

Obviously, there's a fair amount of wiggle room here (as well as above the ceiling and under the floor) for specific terms, but the overall interpretation makes sense, no?
