"palier" = main bearing; roulement = "bearing", possibly "running gear" Explanation: This is based on a quick look at the Routledge French Tech. Dict. which defines "palier" under the field of [AUTO] as simply "bearing" and under "roulement" gives: [mecanisme] "bearing"; [organes] "running gear." Both the Routledge and the Larousse F-E Dict. also list "palier de roulement" as "rolling bearing." |

main bearing / antifriction or rolling bearing Explanation: The rolling bearing is the active part of the main bearing. Here are some definitions relating to the automotive field, taken from LGDT: (1) industrie automobile génie mécanique bloc-cylindres du véhicule automobile *palier* **main bearing** The bearing that locate and support the crankshaft in an engine block. (h) Synonyme(s): crankshaft bearing (e) base bearing and (2) génie mécanique **roulement** de palier **antifriction bearing** The active part of a bearing, consisting of two raceways between which are arranged, equally spaced, rolling solids of revolution (balls or rollers) of small diameter. The raceways are formed by two concentric rings, or by two parallel ring-like disks, or occasionally by one ring and the journal of the shaft. (a) Synonyme(s): rolling bearing (a) roulement n m (a) Le grand dictionnaire terminologique |

Roulement is specific, palier is more general Explanation: According to Le Petit Larousse, a "roulement" is "the device in a rotating organ that converts a friction movement into a sliding movement, between "paliers" and axis, examples ball bearing, roller bearing, needle bearing" According to Le Petit Larousse, a "palier" is the "mechanical device supporting and guiding a transmission shaft." An illustration for that word gives a very good idea of what is what. In other words, a"'roulement" is located inside the "palier" that locates and supports the roulement and axis. In automotive, the palier is very often a machine surface of a larger ensemble, therefore it is easy to use "palier" and "roulement" interchangeably, but it is not technically correct. |
