Explanation:
Did find the complete definition in the dictionnaire terminologique ... but no English equivalent.
So once I had established that the French term referred to the multiple function switch attached to the steering shaft, under the steering wheel, I went right to the source for the English term: My son works as a project engineer for the 2nd most important worldwide supplier of switches to the automotive industry. He knew exactly what I was talking about and gave me the English term. (And it does look like a stalk shooting out of the tree, but I could not have guessed it)
