French term or phrase:altération
When changed from a noun to a verb to describe the condition of the wall coating, should "altération" become "spoilt", "altered", "weathered" or "deteriorated" in the following sentence:
"Designed to ensure the protection of the walls, the long since disappeared roofing and the spoilt/altered/weathered/deteriorated coating, leave the masonry open to the taking root and penetration of vegetation".
The original French sentence read:
"La couverture et l'enduit assurant la protection des murs, la disparition de la premiere at l'alteration du second, ouvrent la maconnerie à l'installation et la pénétration de la végétation"
