a crémaillière est un tige de fer munie de crans. in plain english an iron or steel rod with teeth, that is a gear mounted on a cylinder that provides lift as the teeth of the gear are turned
vérin is a jack, particularly a hydraulic jack. here I think crémaillière is descriptive. it is simply a hydraulic jack. you can find a picture of a crémaillière in the 1999 edition of le petit Larousse after seeing the illustration it is quite clear. when I searched eurodic using the word gear, I got crémaillière as a french equivalent
