vis vérins are screw jacks, used to mount structures on uneven surfaces when they have to be moved arond frequently.

You can see them on some garden tables, on scaffolding (acrows) on sloping ground, etc.

Here's one used in a telescope:
AD : Ø 105 mm, gradués de 5 mn en 5 mn. Déclinaison : Ø 96 mm, gradué de degré
en degré. Pied colonne avec vis vérins, hauteur 40 cm, diamètre 102 mm. ...

Obviously if the ground is too soft and you've got to spread the load, you can't use this type of foot, but beams instead. Although you could put beams under the feet, of course.

Because the jacks leave an inviting space under the floor of the structure, you've got to finish the bottom of the walls, hence the "réagréage".

Thanks very much for saving my life. I took on a French text which I though would be a lot easier and as I don't have much experience with technical stuff, it has proven to be a bit of a nightmare, plus the fact that I do most of my work from German, anyway. Thanks again.
