French term or phrase: étude
I'm translating the CV of an engineer and the word "étude" is used in different ways - sometimes to mean "study" as in "Etude de l'impact sur l'environnement" and sometimes as "design" as in "Etude de définition (de l'autoroute)" which Termium gives as "conceptual design".

So far so good...but then comes "Etude du système de transport en milieu rural". Seems to me that a study of a system and the design of a system are 2 different things. Any idea which one could apply here?

Thanks a lot!

this refers to a "preliminary study". Bear in mind that
Explanation:
"étude de définition" can only be called "design" in a loose sense (conceptual design refers to the principles to be used in layout and planning and not the planning itself).

Study, Survey, analysis

Explanation:
There is another meaning it is survey generally made in this context.
I am suspicious about "design"
Perhaps survey fits for last one

disagree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: Not necessarily. That would be a "pré-étude".

study

Explanation:
Absent more context, there's really no way to tell. However, the use of "etude" alone (sans "definition" or similar words) suggests "study" as a safe choice.

There's also the fact that in the world of public policy, studies outnumber actual work by a factor of many to one. "Study of a rural transport system" sounds like a fine piece of engineering policy-wonkage, and not at all unusual.

Given these two considerations, I'd go with just "study"...

PS to previous suggestion:

Explanation:
"Study of a rural transit system" catches even better the flavor of public enterprise.

("Transit" popped into my feeble brain just as I hit "Submit"!!)

Parallel?

Explanation:
If you're prepared to accept that a parallel can be drawn with architects, then "étude" is most commonly represented by "study". "Preliminary study" is usually represented by "pré-étude".
