French term or phrase: étais de sécurité
In the sentence below, should "étais de sécurité" be translated as "safety props"? I know that by itself "étai" can mean "stay", "prop", "strut" and "support".

"Following the eartquake, the damage caused to buildings was inspected and where required "étais de sécurité" were fitted."

Thank you
Helen
English translation:safety props
Explanation:
a "prop" is a rigid kind of support, whereas a "stay" is usually in the form of a cable, especially in the nautical vocabulary. However, both tems are used rather loosely. In this case I would use "prop" or "shore"

safety supports

Explanation:
Why not supports since you are talking about the aftermath of an earthquake.
