Sort of coat in a painting system applied before the top coat is applied

Explanation:
Normally a primer coat is first applied before filling in the cracks with a paste. Once this filling is done, another coat of paint (primer/ oil paint) is applied which may be called the basecoat. The top coat is applied on this basecoat.

Explanation:
Primer is translated as "apprêt", and is used more to cover flaws and irregularities.
Base coat is acceptable but is spelled in two separate words.
Undercoat is best if you use top coat in the translation. It is used to ake sure that the final color will not be altered by a former shade.
