In an automotive context - a car lease agreement - 'tatouage' is a description of an option included on the car, could it be some sort of tagging, marking or detailing? TIA

VIN etching
Explanation:
Points to Alexandra Hague-Freises. She is perfectly right about the insurance thing too. Just thought you might like to know that it is also referred to as : VIN etching (vehicle identification number etching).

http://www.state.ma.us/ccj/watch.htm#vin

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Etching component of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Watch Your Car Program allows owners of motor vehicles to voluntarily have the windows on their vehicle etched with the VIN. Motor vehicles treated with this process are less likely to be stolen because they are less attractive to thieves who would have to replace all of the stolen vehicle's glass in addition to the VIN numbers. The etching can be done by a local law enforcement agency and is supported by a software program from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).
The process itself takes only a few minutes. For example, utilizing a computer, dot matrix printer or typewriter, and software provided by the NICB, police department personnel can create VIN stencils for each vehicle registered in the program. The software links into NICB's VIN Assist Program which verifies the accuracy of the VIN number and may result in locating salvaged vehicles whose VIN's have been altered and sold illegally.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts offers reductions in automobile insurance premium charges ranging from 5% to 35% for private passenger motor vehicles and certain commercial motor vehicles equipped with anti-theft mechanisms or vehicle recovery systems. A 15% discount on comprehensive insurance is offered for vehicles with window etching. Owners of motor vehicles participating in this program simply provide documentation, issued by police departments providing the service, to their insurance companies for a discount.

Explanation:
I looked around on the net and it seems to involve etching the car's license plate number and serial number on the windshield in order to track the car down in case of theft.
