Für die Verglasung zwischen dem Eventbereich mit vorgelagertem Foyer und dem »Rundgang der Mythen« einerseits sowie die das Foyer zum Atrium hin abschließende Festverglasung andrerseits war G30 gefordert; darüber hinaus sollte die Verglasung absturzsichernde Funktion übernehmen.

I know what is meant and am looking for a good way of expressing it! Maybe with preventing falling, but I am sure there must be better.

Haven't gone through the Spiegel article but have instead thought independently of it. You'd probably best rephrase the part of the sentence after the semi-colon along the lines of:

... ; moreover the glazing was intended to spare the need for the provision of security railings.
