German term

Multiple

German to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
From a collection of jewellery and artistic objects which were inspired by the works of a European sculptor:

"Kleine Statue, 20 cm, Multiple, Bronze, nach Wunsch poliert oder patiniert"

At first I thought it was "limited edition", but I now I'm sure it's actually the opposite, i.e. something mass produced. What's the correct term for that here?

multiple original

I suspect this is what's meant

Another option is to say 'limited edition', which implies that there are multiple copies

agree Wolf Brosius (X) : possibly still very individual

neutral Stephen Sadie : i find this to be an intrinsic contradiction, how can their be multiple originals? where did you find this term ?

Original simply means it's not copied from another work, but is an origonal piiece of art.It's more often applied to multiple prints. See link above

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I don't think we really got to the bottom of this. In the end I just left this as 'multiple'. I agree with the comment about 'reproduction' being a copy of something created earlier. I am also convinced that there is the term implies no limit to numbers, i.e. they will produce as many as there is demand for."

reproduction

I suspect this is a "warped" way of saying that it is a reproduction
Peer comment(s):

agree MMUlr : IMO several issues, reproductions available.//Have a nice time-off.. :-)

neutral Stephen Roche : Reproduction is more fitting for a painting or sculpture that was later copied by another artist. In this case we're talking about several statues produced from one mould by one artist.

sorry but i disagree: i have often seen this term in exactly the context needed by the asker

one in a series

As the statue is cast from a mould every one would be an original, so multiple original would be correct, but I've not come across that term. Most artists would limit the numbers, if that wasn't done here and no one knows how many exist, I would phrase it like one in a series.
Peer comment(s):

agree Stephen Sadie : this works too, "one in a series from the original" possibly
