German term or phrase: Schichtung (der Kette)
I'm trying to translate the term "ungeschichtet", used in the description of an antique rug. I can't quite believe it can be as simple as "unlayered".

I've found the term "Schichtung der Kettfäden", where Kettfäden is warp threads. But after having read the description in the following link I'm none the wiser:

I'd be very grateful for any input.

English translation:(warp) depression
Explanation:

Rugs can be woven with their warp strings held back on different levels, termed sheds. This is done by pulling the wefts of one shed tight, separating the warps on two different levels, which leaves one warp on a lower level. The technical term is “one warp is depressed” Warps can be depressed slightly, ore more tightly, which will cause a more or less pronounced rippling or “ridging” on the back of the rug.

Sometimes the warps are depressed or offset so greatly that, from the back of the rug, alternate warps are hidden. If this occurs, each knot will show on the back of the rug as a single node. This is diagramed at the right with an example utilizing symmetrical knots, but this can also occur with asymmetrical knots and different degrees of warp depression or offset When the warp is offset 90 degrees, as in the second example, the alternate warps will lie on top of its predecessor

…. most weavers depress the warp strands to some degree. That is, instead of both warp strands lying side by side as illustrated, the warps lie on top of each other. This will allow for a much more compact structure and greater durability in most cases. The degree of depression can also be important in terms of determining the provenance of any particular rug.

agree  philgoddard: So here it would be "undepressed warp", which doesn't get many hits, but appears to be correct. Well done!
