Heutzutage geht in einem Auto alles über den CAN-Bus, sogar die Türkontaktschalter (bei VW zumindest). Es gibt eine sogenannte Verbauliste, wo alle Teilnehmer eingetragen werden, die auf dem Bus liegen. Die Verbauliste kann über den CAN abgefragt werden. So weiß das Steuergerät welche Signale zu erwarten bzw zu senden sind und kann bei Nichtvorhandensein der Signale Fehler anzeigen. Es gibt eine Verbauliste an Steuergeräten, die als CAN-Knoten im Fahrzeug vorhanden sind. Die Verbauliste setzt sich aus verschiedenen Informationen zusammen.
