German term or phrase: Materialeinsatzquote
Can someone give me a good translation for "materialeinsatz" in this context (can I use estimate of material usage or costs?):

"Im abgelaufenen GJ 1999/00 stehen Mio DM 135,4 Materialaufwendungen einer Gesamtleistung von Mio. DM 155,0 gegenüber; dies entsprict einer Materialeinsatzquote von 87.3%"

English translation:materials usage [ratio or quota]
Explanation:
Materialeinsatzquote is a performance indicator.

Cf. the following:
…other improvements in manufacturing processes to improve materials usage, reduce waste, reduce labor and increase throughput.

This new development forces shops to watch this number carefully. Any appreciable drop will have to be made up by an increase in the refinish materials allowance, or a reduction in materials usage to maintain an even materials GPM

cost of materials percentage / percentage cost of materials

Explanation:
("Quote" often translates as "percentage")

- but Google hits showed that there are several possible variations.

----------
a couple of examples:

Among two-digit manufacturing industries, the percentage of cost of materials that is estimated ranges from less than 1 percent for leather and leather products to 19 percent for printing and publishing and instruments and related products.

http://www.bea.doc.gov/bea/ai/estab92.htm.

The primary ingredients used and the approximate percentage cost of raw materials were cocoa products (23%), sugar (8%), dairy products (5-6%) and nuts (5-6%).

material usage

Explanation:
Not being close to my management accounting references, I would agree with uel on this one. The answers using inputs were not that far off, although I believe material usage ratio is much clearer as to what is meant than input quota would be. This 87.3% material usage ratio is one component in the calculation of an efficiency variance, which contrasts inputs (or raw materials) purchased with inputs (or raw materials)actually used.

See the following management accounting reference:
http://www.ami.bolton.ac.uk/courseware/indman/ch3/indman03no...

Efficiency variance (Ve) =
(Inputs that should have been used - Actual inputs used) x Standard cost of inputs
e.g. If the cost of an item is £25.00, the standard cost is £24.00 and 20,000 units were made (as sub assemblies) or bought (then it would be a price variance), then:
Vc (materials) = £(24 - 25) x 20,000 = - £20,000 this can be written as - £20,000, (£20,000), or £20,000U.
If the labour units for an activity are 4.3 hours at £10.00 per hour i.e. £43.00 and the standard cost is £45.00 and again 20,000 are produced, then:
Vc (labour) = £(45-43)x 20,000 = £40,000 i.e. £40000 or £40,000F.
Efficiency variances effectively measure the deviations from standards of utilisation of resources. Resources are never fully utilised; in the case of materials waste occurs for several reasons. Materials may enter a process and never exit in the form of a product that can be sold. The same argument can be applied to labour and to the cost of equipment.

In this case, however, without more specific knowledge of what precisely the 135.4 million marks represent, it's best to stick with material usage ratio or just material usage.
