German term or phrase: Quetschfuge
Unfortunately, I don't have more information, this is only a caption used for a photograph showing floor tiles.

I found this definition in German, perhaps it helps: http://www.baumarkt.de/lexikon/Quetschfuge.htm

squezzing nip

From DE-OS 29 01 633 it is known, on the opposite of the visible side rear of the profile board in the spring a so called squeezing nip to install so that a projecting at right angles from the spring narrow abutment strip arises, the groove is kept so low that results in an expansion joint in the groove when ...

What about:

Existing air pockets are not substantially minimized in the squeezing nip. http://www.google.co.in/patents/WO2005052241A1?cl=en

This finding was due to the impregnation of the goods, the pressure of the padding rolls in squeezing nip at the relevant points disparate impact, so the tube is pinched off at the edges qualitatively different than it is the case with the other parts http://www.google.vu/patents/EP0080183A1?cl=en

Linearity of the nip line is ensured despite the freely adjustable nip pressure. benningergroup.com

Note: The inverse search will not result in much hits as "Quetschfuge" is too specifique.

BTW, "Queschfuge" "buckling" has only one Ghit:

The buckling of the spring is equivalent to a laterally projecting projection on the spring to be displaced similarly to an arc-shaped spring.
It can be seen that, on the side facing away from the space 12 a squeezing nip 14 is arranged as a narrow groove. As can be seen from Figures 2 and 3, the squeezing nip 14 serves to be REDUCTION when the spring 1 1 in the horizontal direction, that is toward the side away, of the other panel 1, is displaced. http://www.google.com/patents/WO2013023639A1?cl=en

Conclusion: Even this only counterargument shows that "buckling" cannot be translated by "Quetschfuge". Instead of that it must be translated differently, e.g. by "Beulung, Stauchung, Biegung, Knickung" as also proved be renowed Online dictionaries like dict.cc

Extruded joint

Definition extruded joint:
Extruded joints are formed simply by... laying one course of brick on top of another. The face of the extruded joint is presented as the natural squuezing out of the mortar from between the bricks due to the weight above it. When the extruded joint is formed, it is left as it is to give a rustic and rough appearance. It is not very good for weather resistance, as water can gather on top of the extruded mortar, and parts of the mortar can break off and allow moisture in. For this reason, its applications outdoors are very limited.

What do you think?

As the first link shows, this phenomenon is also known as heaving. As 'heaving' takes place only at the joints, it may be preferable to 'buckling'.

Thanks. That is indeed the definition I based my answer on. Without seeing the picture for which you are composing the caption, it is hard to say. What does it show - buckling/heaving or extrusion?

Asker: This suggestion definitely makes sense when this definition is used for Quetschfuge: http://www.baumarkt.de/lexikon/Quetschfuge.htm

Asker: The picture is really small and only shows a set of tiles, but I can't really see any buckling. I will suggest this to my client; it's really impossible to decide without a proper explanation, it could be buckling, it could be an extruded/excess joint as Melanie is suggesting. Thanks for the suggestions!

disagree  Johannes Gleim: buckling (Beulung) is no joint (Fuge). Tiles will not buckle, but crack.

building joint

as Cilian suggested to propose. Cf. discussion.

But I have no time to substantiate this additionally as my father died.

Note added at 9 days (2013-11-18 10:40:51 GMT)

After returning to home I looked into my technical dictionaries and found that a building joint is similar to an expansion joint. For this approach I have to assume joints or gaps instead of cracks or fissures.

expansion joint (EJ) A movement joint mainly to allow expansion.
(The Pernguin dictionary of Building)

What is an expansion joint?
In building construction, an expansion joint is a mid-structure separation designed to relieve stress on building materials caused by building movement induced by:

- thermal expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes,
- sway caused by wind,
- seismic events, etc.
Because the joint bisects the entire structure, it marks a gap through all building assemblies--walls, floors, roofs, decks, planters, plazas, etc. This gap must be filled to restore the waterproofing, fire proofing, sound proofing, air barrier, roof membrane, trafficable surface and other functions of the building elements it bisects.
Expansion joint systems are used to bridge the gap and restore building assembly functions while accommodating expected movements.
The term "movement joint" has been widely adopted in preference to "expansion joint" as it more appropriately encompasses the fact that building movement results in both compression and expansion of the material installed.

The problem is to know, what the photo shows. Is it a gap or joint to prevent cracking of tiles or is it the crack or a cracked tile?

A building joint is a junction where building elements meet without applying a static load from one element to another. When one or more of these vertical or horizontal elements that meet are required by the local building code to have a fire-resistance rating, the resulting opening that makes up the joint must be firestopped in order to restore the required compartmentalisation.

An expansion joint or movement joint is an assembly designed to safely absorb the heat-induced expansion and contraction of construction materials, to absorb vibration, to hold parts together, or to allow movement due to ground settlement or earthquakes. They are commonly found between sections of buildings, bridges, sidewalks, railway tracks, piping systems, ships, and other structures.
Building faces, concrete slabs, and pipelines expand and contract due to warming and cooling from seasonal variation, or due to other heat sources. Before expansion joint gaps were built into these structures, they would crack under the stress induced.
