These terms are part of a school report:
pflichtgegenstand would be 'compulsory subject', and whalpflichtgegenstand is then an "elective"? wahl vs pflicht??

The second one sounds like a contradiction in terms, however, this does describe it.

mandatory elective subject/mandatory subject

A "Wahlpflichtgegenstand" is selected from a list of options. A "Pflichtgegenstand" is a core requirement.
