I am giving it to Andrea as she was really quick with her answer. <br>A special Thank you goes to Johannes for providing extensive backup argument. I had in fact asked for a translation of Baumuster as I was pretty certain on translations for the two other terms that incorporate Baumuster.

but the real terms asked for verification were "Baumusterprüfung" and "Baumusterprüfbescheinigung", even only "Baumuster" was entered into the field "term or phrase".
In fact, the asker asked for proof of his used translation 'EC Type Examination Certificate' and corresponding references. Surely, segments of the term like "Baumuster" are included in this confirmation.

"prototype" would in some contexts be the correct term. However, here the context was indicated by the asker (Certifications, Baumusterprüfbescheinigung) right away.

(to first comment) Whilst I won't remove my agree on English (I sort of want to make a stubborn stamp on the answer that sounds the best English), I do get your point, and silently submit. :-)
What is coming to the English language? Or the German language, for that matter....
(to second comment) Actually I see what you mean now, it is another sense of the word Muster... more hypothetical. Okay, you sold me. I'm still not going to remove the agree on prototype, since in some contexts I still think it may be correct, but you have sold me on the correctness of type.

Protoype means a demonstration sample, not the final product sample submitted to type testing. Prototypes are still subject to modifications and may comprise inappropriate materials. Type test samples have to fulfill all requirements from the relevant standards and are made of correct materials.

Baumusterprüfung/Typprüfung, als auch Baumusterprüfbescheinigung sind mit ihren anderssprachlichen Entsprechungen seit langem international genormt. Angefangen hatte das zunächst national, in Deutschland durch die DKE (Deutsche Kommision Elektrotechnik), später europaweit innerhalb der CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation) , bzw. CENELEC (Comité Européen de Normalisation Electrotechnique), und anschließend im Rahmen von IEC (International Electrical Commission) mit dem IEV (International Electrical Vocabulary).
Ein ähnlicher Weg wurde auch in UK beschritten. Kein Wunder, daß Andrea und ich hier übereinstimmen.

...and just because the German is un-German, that is no reason to use English that is un-English. I do not copy typing errors from the source into the target, and nor would I copy poor phraseology - as long as there is an opposing reference which makes it justifiable. In this case, the Langenscheidt is sufficiently authoritative to choose the term that makes more sense.

"do not sound German enough" probably just as little as "type" sounds English to you. I always am careful when using the IATE; however since this is a text about 'EC Type Examination Certificate' it is obvious to use EC-language which is stored in the IATE. "Prototype" is a term you would use when referring to the first of a series (industrial context) - here in German the term "prototype" would be used.
IATE also gives Baumusterprüfung (bescheinigung) - type examination (certificate)

I can understand why some people have suggested alternatives, because they will find examples of them. This is the danger of online sources: quality is inconsistent and so mistranslations get multiplied by each subsequent translator believing the source to be authoritative. Don't get me wrong, I love linguee and the like, but sometimes the good old Langenscheidt has it. :-)
